Fuel System

Gas Tank
I'm going to pull the fuel tank on 50 Commander and take it in to be boiled out.  My question, are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of? It looks like I'll have to cut the fuel line, is that correct? Any other particulars would be mightily appreciated!

Answer:

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY
DON'T CUT ANYTHING, has there been fuel/gas in there in the last 6 months? If so, flush with water To remove tank, from inside the trunk open the access hole/plate and remove wire from sending unit, disconnect fuel line with fuel/brake line wrench. Disconnect lower clamp from fuel filler, disconnect vents. . loosen all the mounting screws slowly and let tank lower on to something to support it. Remember which side of tank has the bracket has the spring.

Vapor lock ?

This maybe a stupid question....anybody have trouble with a Avanti R-1 vapor locking? It runs pretty good in the 170-180 degree range. When it gets around 190 it acts just like it's starting to vapor lock. As soon as I get it out where I can get some air through it, it straightens out.It strikes me like the fuel line runs awfully close to exhaust manifold.
Any ideas?? BTW I am counting on the dash temp guage for my temp readings, I'm not 100% sure about it's accuracy.

Answer:

I think you may have already answered your question. Yes, it does sound like vapor lock. Today's fuels vaporize at a  much lower temperature than past fuels. Some easy fixes, insulate the fuel line, move the fuel line away from the manifold, and electric fuel pump. Another good modification is a thick carb gasket made out of asbestos or other heat insulating material.
